Learn to Play Hockey

September 22, 2019 - March 29, 2020

The Learn to Play Program is an introduction to hockey for participants 4 to 11 years of age at an affordable rate. Free rental equipment is provided with a $100 deposit and a participant’s first ever session is always free. Players hit the ice twice a week with high energy, active sessions where everyone participates. The program is designed for skaters that have a basic knowledge of ice skating and are interested in the sport of Ice Hockey. Four six-week sessions are offered throughout the hockey season with a game week at the end of every session. Striving participants will be recommended by coaches to participate in one of our Recreation Programs and will be allowed to move up to the appropriate recreational program until December 31 of the current hockey season. No move up will be allowed after December 31 until the start of the next hockey season.

Recreational Program
September 30, 2019 - March 13, 2020

The Recreational Program is offered to promote hockey development locally in Billings. Players will have the opportunity to hit the ice as frequently as the travel programs without the additional financial and time investment of weekend long, statewide travel.  The program is designed to offer ample practice time with weekly games in Billings against local competition with occasional day trips to neighboring cities (Bozeman, Helena, Miles City, etc.) for inter-program competition. Teams will be coached by former Travel Program Coaches who can no longer travel on weekends. Quality of practices, competition, and coaching will provide players the opportunity to improve their game with more puck touches and less time behind the windshield.

Travel is an option and is limited to a max number of tournaments per age group during the season. Rosters will be determined on a first come, first served basis. Tournament options will be given to parents at the beginning of the season. Costs associated with traveling will be the parent’s responsibility, including hotels, coach fees for non-parent coaches, and tournament entry fees.

Recreational Program is offered at the 8U, 10U and 12U levels receiving two practices and one hour of game time per week.

6U/8U “Mite” Recreational Program
September 30, 2019 - March 13, 2020

Mites is a local program designed for the development of the youngest group of hockey players.  Several teams practice together with a focus on individual skills and FUNdamental development.  In fact, Billings Mites get the most ice time of any 8U group in Montana!  Experienced second year Mite players may be recommended by the coaches committee for advanced placement in the recreational program to provide a more appropriate environment for skill development of the player and their peers.

Travel is an option for up to a maximum of two out of town tournaments during the season. No travel-specific teams will be set, and teams will be equally developed on a first come first serve basis. Tournament options will be given to parents at the beginning of the season. Costs associated with traveling will be the parent’s responsibility, including hotels, coach fees for non-parent coaches, and tournament entry fees. Payment of tournament fees must be made promptly to the Age Group Director or Team Manager. All kids in this group will be given equal and fair opportunity to participate in all the tournaments.

The Travel team will play in a maximum of four out of town tournaments plus the BAHL home tournament. Players on the travel team will practice and play all games with the remaining recreational program players when not traveling to their tournaments. Costs associated with traveling will be the parent’s responsibility, including the tournament entry fee. Payment of tournament entry fee to the Age Group Director or Team Manager must be made promptly. All kids on the Squirt Travel team will be given equal and fair opportunity to participate in all tournament games.

12U “PeeWee” Recreational Program
September 30, 2019 - March 13, 2020

Focus on speed work, explosive strength in upper and lower body and the development of core strength is critical at this age group. Body checking skills will begin to be introduced at the PeeWee age group.

Recreational players will have the option to play in a maximum of two out of town tournaments if coaching and player interest is available. Travel Program
September 30, 2019 - March 13, 2020

The Travel Program is the most competitive level of hockey offered by the BAHL.  Evaluations are required to be invited to participate.  These teams play a season of games requiring statewide travel on weekends concluding with a competitive state tournament.  Teams also typically participate in regional tournaments to face competition from Western Canada, the Dakotas, and Wyoming among others. Evaluations occur in early to mid-September with the season concluding in March.  All players participating in tryouts must have completed their BAHL registration and paid the required fee(s) or set up on payment plan.  Costs associated with traveling will be the parent’s responsibility, including hotels, coach fees for non-parent coaches, and tournament entry fees.  Playing time is not guaranteed in the travel program. Dry land is included in fees for 14U and HS.
